Cirrus keeps your notes in a database on your Mac, in its own folder under Application Support. When iCloud is on, it syncs them through CloudKit, into the private database of your own iCloud account. Apple stores that copy under your Apple Account, and I have no access to it.

If you sign out of iCloud, syncing stops and your notes stay on your Mac. You can export them as plain Markdown files whenever you like.

This applies only to the version you buy on this site. When you enter your license key, Cirrus sends three things to license.trycirrus.app:

• Your license key.
• A machine identifier. This is a one-way hash of your Mac’s hardware ID, so the service can tell your Macs apart without learning which Mac it is.
• Your Mac’s name, as set in System Settings, to label the activation.

The service passes these to Polar, the store that sold you the key, which records the activation. It sends back a signed license token and the email address you bought with. Cirrus keeps the key, the token, and that email in your Mac’s Keychain. The key alone also goes to your iCloud Keychain, if you use it, so your other Macs can activate with it.

The token lasts 30 days. Near the end, Cirrus sends the key and token again to renew it, and it sends the same two when you deactivate a Mac. If your Mac stays offline, Pro keeps working for three months past the token’s end. The service keeps no database of its own and does not log keys or tokens.

If you bought Cirrus on the Mac App Store, none of this happens. Apple handles the purchase, and the app only asks the App Store whether Pro is unlocked.

The version from this site checks for updates by fetching a short list of releases from trycirrus.app/updates.xml, which is served from GitHub. Updates download from GitHub too. The updater can send a profile of your Mac, but that option is off, so a check carries nothing beyond what any web request does. You can turn automatic checks off in Settings.

The Mac App Store version is updated by the App Store.

Purchases on this site are handled by Polar, the merchant of record, under its own privacy policy. Polar collects what it needs to take payment and handle tax, and shares your order and email address with me. Purchases on the Mac App Store are handled by Apple under Apple’s privacy policy. I never see your card details.

Send Feedback in Cirrus opens an email to contact@trycirrus.app with the app and macOS versions filled in. Report an Issue opens a public form on GitHub with the same two versions. Nothing is sent until you send it. I use what you write only to answer you and fix the problem.

The site is hosted by Vercel and uses Vercel Web Analytics, which counts visits in aggregate without cookies. There are no cookies, ads, or trackers here. The Download and Buy links take you to GitHub and Polar. After you buy, the thank-you page sends the checkout number Polar gave it to license.trycirrus.app to show your key.
